There is a moment in every creative journey when a world stops being an idea and becomes something real. Oddly Grimm has reached that moment.

I am pleased to announce that

Oddly Grimm Volume I will launch on 31 October 2026.

This first volume brings together the tales that open the door into the Oddly Grimm universe — stories with roots that stretch back through folklore, and new originals that belong only here. It marks the beginning of a world where familiar shapes hide unfamiliar truths, and where every tale adds another thread to the tapestry.

In the weeks leading up to the launch, more glimpses into the Oddly Grimm universe will appear.

Moments that reveal how Oddly Grimm is built, why its imagery matters, and how readers can interact with the world beyond the page.

There will also be opportunities to take part in shaping the universe — through website polls, Instagram interactions, and small choices that help guide future stories and reveal hidden details.

Blog Post 2 touched on why folklore exists — how old tales were once new, unsettling, and unfamiliar to the people who first heard them. Every legend began as an original story before time smoothed its edges and turned it into tradition.

Oddly Grimm follows the same path.

Alongside tales with roots stretching back through centuries, the Oddly Grimm universe also brings forward stories that have never been told before. Not retellings. Not reinterpretations. Originals. New shadows stepping into the world for the first time.

The image above is a scene from the upcoming Oddly Grimm series School for Shadows. At first glance, it looks like a normal classroom: a teacher, a student, a handful of others watching from their desks. But as with all things in Oddly Grimm, what you see may not be what you think.

This is where the original stories begin — in places that feel familiar, until they don’t. In moments that look ordinary, until they shift. In characters who appear one way, until the truth reveals something entirely different.

Oddly Grimm is not just revisiting the past.

It’s creating new tales for a new world.

Stories that belong to this universe alone.

And as the series unfolds, you’ll discover why some stories can only be told here — and why they could not exist anywhere else.

When Shadows Remember

Folklore survives in the dim places where stories were once whispered by firelight, shaping instincts and shadows that still linger in the Oddly Grimm universe.

          When Shadows Remember

Folklore remembers what people feared long before history began to write things down.

Folklore has always been humanity’s way of explaining the things that frightened us long before we had the language to describe them. These stories weren’t written for comfort — they were shaped by danger, memory, and the need to pass warnings from one generation to the next.

Every village had its tales: creatures that hunted in the dark, spirits that punished the careless, shadows that followed those who strayed too far from the path. These stories weren’t simply entertainment. They were survival guides disguised as myths.

Folklore teaches us that fear has a purpose. It keeps us alert. It keeps us alive. And even now, in a world lit by screens instead of firelight, those old stories still resonate. They remind us that the unknown is never as far away as we think — and that every shadow has a history.

Oddly Grimm draws from that tradition. Not by retelling old tales, but by honouring the instinct behind them: the sense that the world is larger, stranger, and more mysterious than it appears. Folklore survives because it speaks to something ancient in us — something that still listens when the night grows quiet.

A quiet reflection on where Oddly Grimm began

It was the Brothers Grimm. They infected my mind when I was only a child. I read the tales over and over each year as I grew. When I reached my teenage years, I began to feel that there should be more to them. I wanted to keep reading the same tales, as one watches television series' or movies over and over, but there was something missing. In my mind, I began to imagine plot twists, character changes, location and time alterations, so I could envisage new tales borne from the originals.

This continued over many years (with life's gaps in between). It became a mental pastime. Seeing my reflection in the bathroom mirror would trigger thoughts of an original well known tale, thus shifting my mind into creation mode, whereby I would mentally create a different version throughout the day, during those moments between important daily tasks.

After an evening meal, taking a walk around the local area in the dark, it was not difficult to recreate silhouettes into something more sinister, or feel the chill run down my spine as I walked past the jet-black alleyway between houses; my senses informing me that one or more shadows are lurking there with purpose unknown.

As life moved me through school, work, marriage and parenting - all of which had the obligatory ups and downs - those experiences influenced the adaptations, reimaginings and multitude of original ideas that formed in my memory.

But, there comes a point when all of those tales and stories cannot remain stored, purely for my own enjoyment.

So, Oddly Grimm is gradually leaving the nest and spreading throughout the universe.
